Acquired by the merchant Luigi Bonomi, Milan, early 19th century (?).
Purchased by Isabella Stewart Gardner (as the work of the French arist François Clouet, about 1516-1572) from the Bonomi-Cereda collection, Milan for 8,400 lire on 22 May 1895, through the American art historian Bernard Berenson (1865-1959).
Commentary
Isabella Stewart Gardner kept meticulous records of many of her acquisitions. In keeping with this legacy, object information is continually being reviewed, updated, and enriched in order to give greater access to the collection.
