This square, horizontal oil painting is a portrait of the dauphin, or eldest son of the king of France. François D’Angouleme, who has light skin, faces slightly to our left and is set off by a bright green background. He wears a black jacket over a beige shirt and a black cap set back and to our left on his head. A delicate plume hangs jauntily from the back of the cap. The dauphin’s expression is impassive, staring off to our left. His brown eyes are wide open and there is a hint of a simple mustache. The painting is displayed in a gold frame with elaborate carvings on all four sides.
