This vertical oil painting is a self portrait of the artist. He is shown from nearly the waist up and is turned partly to his left, although his eyes look in your direction. The right side of his head and torso are brightly lit, while his left side is in deep shadow. His skin is pinkish white and his reddish brown hair is balding on top, but he has an ample, curled mustache. He is wearing a gray three piece suit with a white collared shirt and a greenish tie. The swirling- patterned wallpaper background is painted in warm browns. There is a vertical brown stripe next to the artist’s body, not far from the right edge of the painting. The brushwork throughout the painting is lively and loose. The frame is gold with a repeating pattern.
