This etching of a canal scene is packed with details. Starting from the viewer's left is a large brick building rounding to the right on a canal. An enormous open pointed arch doorway, with a candle lantern hanging centered above. Below sitting on the second three steps, a bearded man leans forward cooking with one hand, holding a plate with the other. Behind him is a shadowy figure carrying a basket towards him. As we continue along the building to the viewers right there are two small windows, one brick covered and above a smaller opened window shutters lay aside. Continuing along the viewer's right, the building slopes up to another large doorway with an arched rod iron design that has a lantern suspended above it. A clothesline connects the two buildings to the viewers far right separated by the waterway. A gondolier pushes off the building with his pole guiding his gondola to the viewers far right. Two other gondolas and their drivers are coming towards the canal from a bridge opening, above shadowy figures crossing the bridge in the center of the drawing. The building to the right is filled with windows open and shuttered with large balconies, and several laundry lines. The waterflow in the canal is suggested by lines swirling horizontally and vertically.
