This is a portable Japanese picnic set contained in an open rectangular carrying case. It is entirely lacquered in a shiny gold, red and black. All parts are similarly lacquered with gold flowers and leaves. It measures 13 ¼ X 13 ¾ x 7 ½ inches. The case is divided into four sections with a metal handle at the top. Two opposite sides have a dark brown lacquer on which there is a lovely woven pattern in the shape of two inverted triangles. These sides give the case its stability. On the upper left is an open shelf holding nine, eight-sided stacked plates. Below are four tiered stacking food boxes. The right half holds three stacked containers the top and bottom containers a glossy black and the middle container a glossy red. The red box in the center has a fitted stopper, concluding that it was used for some sort of liquid. The base has short square feet with scroll work surrounding the front corners.
