This is an Italian intaglio seal and mold.  The intaglio engraving is made in an oval-shaped, dark reddish-brown quartz called sard. The engraving and the white impression, or mold, show a nude male figure sitting on a rock with some rounded forms at his feet, possibly animals. The man’s arms are raised playing a lyre and his head is tilted upward.  In front of the lyre, a vertical set of Ancient Greek characters separates it from a long sword that juts upward, having arisen from the far side of the man’s legs. In front of the legs is a shield with a face on it, and above, some plant-like stalks filling one of rounded corners toward the top.  While the intaglio is engraved, the white plaster mold would have been poured into the engraving, allowed to set, thus producing the same image as in the intaglio but reversed and in low relief.
