Japanese wooden fan with long corded threads of dark green, gold, dark red, beige, and black trailing from each upper side. The wooden ribs are tied together at the top, where the tassels are attached, by a green thread. The colors in the tassels are reflected in the scene painted on the wood fan, where parts of the natural wood are left unpainted at the top and bottom borders as well as a wide semicircular strip near the center. Taking center stage is what appears to be a large ginkgo tree with a prominent brown trunk and several canopies of semi-circular leaves. The tree emerges out of a green ground with a dark blue river coursing behind it. The tops of three smaller ginkgo trees dot the horizon. Among the trees are what appear to be two golden clouds edged with blue, red, black, and green. Two white cranes with black tail feathers, one on each side of the central tree, soar against the brown-colored sky. Above the cranes are gold clouds edged with blue, red, black, and green. The metal pin connecting the ribs of the fan at the bottom of the piece is shaped like a butterfly. On the opposite side of the fan, the same golden clouds are painted in the same places as the first side. Among the clouds are faint outlines of birds and butterflies in blue, red, black, and green. The metal pin connecting the ribs on this side is shaped like what appears to be a small sparrow in flight.
