A brisé fan is a fan that consists of decorative slats with no pleated leaf. This brisé fan is made entirely of wooden slats woven together with ribbon at the top and attached at the bottom with a clasp. In the center of the front side is a green peacock with dark tail feathers extended partially covering a green pea-hen. To our left and right are flowering bushes with pink and white blossoms that resemble peonies. A simple ivory cord with tassel dangles from the bottom. On the back side are a light-skinned man and woman in a pastoral setting. They are wearing traditional Japanese garments and look and gesture toward a deity in the skies to our left. The man, to our right, is leaning against a gray tiger, its mouth open and looking to our left. The deity wears a robe over his left shoulder and holds his right arm up. He appears to be among storm clouds and lightning. The coloring on the back is muted and mostly in greys and greens. Out of the gray clouds and lightning below the deity there is a dragon’s head and neck. On the wooden slat furthest to our left are the Inscriptions for Kuniminé gwa, possibly the artist’s name, and Utagawa, the seal of the Utagawa School. A cream-colored tassel hangs from the bottom of the fan.
