This pair of small, square, Japanese, black lacquer boxes are painted with gold and reddish brown sprays of small leaves and flowers on the exterior sides. Each side is ribbed horizontally and has rounded edges. A match-stick-like foot is attached in the center of each side to raise the box a few inches. These feet  extend approximately  ¾ of the way to the lid. The feet are painted with black lacquer and are tipped with fitted brass caps at both ends that are etched with botanical designs. The lids each have a painted spray of gold and red/brown flowers similar to those decorating the sides of the boxes. The lids also have 8 equally spaced, brass, half flower forms etched with stems and leaf motifs and attached with tiny brass tacks.
