There is a dense cluster of well lit party goers visible in the uncurtained part of the background on the left. One man in the middle ground at the edge of the curtain stands alone in deep shadow. The dance floor has one couple dancing in the light on the left and another couple in the dark section on the far right. The dancer in the light has her back to us. Her partner, facing us, leans in. He whisks her across the floor and her long train flies after her. The other woman, waltzing in the shadows, wears a dark dress with sparkles of light. She faces the viewer as her partner, with his back to us, whirls her across the floor.
