Prie-dieu (Inginocchiatoio), 17th century
Walnut, pine, and poplar, inlays of mother-of-pearl and ivory, 87.5 x 61 x 51.8 cm (34 7/16 x 24 x 20 3/8 in.)
A prie-dieu is a piece of furniture used for individual prayer. This piece is made of three rectangular boxes (one atop another) with moldings defining the shapes. The largest rectangle is the bottom one and is the kneeler (where the praying person kneels). The middle section is more narrow and is set back on top of the kneeler. On top of the mid-section is the third rectangular box with slightly less width and length but with half the height. This upper portion is an arm or book rest. This prie-dieu is enhanced with a scattered stylistic floral pattern of inset mother-of-pearl and ivory. There is a door in the front of the middle section where a keyhole can be seen. Two pieces of inlay are missing from the center flower here. Also, there is a large crack in the wood that runs the length of the door. Two panels on each side of the door have thin pieces of ivory or mother-of-pearl that run the length of the panels. Under the overhang of the top edge of the arm or book rest is elaborate decorative dentil molding.
