This pen and ink drawing on paper shows two large peacocks in conflict. The bird in the foreground on the left has his back to us. He has either just alighted on the ground or is about to take off in flight. His long tail feathers gracefully swoop in a closed fan along the ground, ending on the far right. His wings are partially open, the right more so than the left. His neck and legs are fully extended as if he is just barely touching the undefined ground. He looks curiously at the other peacock, who faces the viewer in an aggressive stance. His feet are spread far apart, his body close to the ground in a bracing stance. He almost trods on the tail of the other bird. The beak of the aggressor is wide open, as if he is squawking. His chest is puffed out and his neck curved in a reverse S, so that his head juts toward the peacock he challenges. The aggressor’s plumage is fully extended in a wide fan that reaches the full height of the paper. His wings are also fully extended so that one of them touches the wing of the other peacock. It is unclear what will happen next but the lack of aggression shown in the near bird makes it more likely that he is taking off rather than landing.
