This dark and moody painting portrays a naked woman seated on light red drapery thrown over some sort of natural seat  in a shadowy, wooded landscape. Her body is turned to the right, slumped forward with curved shoulders and flexed right knee. Her body forms a loose, shallow S shape. Her bent left knee points straight up allowing her to rest her left foot next to her right knee. She bends her head forward to examine her foot, holding it with both hands. We see the right side of her face in profile. Her skin is light with rosy cheeks and auburn hair that forms a loose cap around her head above her neck. Strong light illuminates the right side of her body, especially her right shoulder and thigh. Her left knee, forearm, and hand are also highlighted while her right hand, face, injured foot, torso under her breasts, pelvis, and left upper leg are in deep shadow. The light also falls strongly on the face of a white hare slinking away from her to the right. Most of the background is very dark. The upper right quadrant has a pale blue sky with huge pink clouds that are faintly darkening at the far right. In this lighted square, there is a pink horizon line with an expanse of green-gray  level land and a large darker mound-like hill on the right.
