Two red wax seals (reverse, one on stretcher member and one on canvas) bearing Chigi seal; both apparently removed from elsewhere and reattached after relining.
Inscribed (on the original canvas reverse, beneath relining): N. 18 [undecipherable] T.

Collection of the art dealers M. Knoedler & Co., New York by 1903.
Purchased by Isabella Stewart Gardner from M. Knoedler & Co., New York on 20 February 1903 for $40,000 through the artist John Singer Sargent (1856–1925).
