Plate: The Nativity, about 1500-1550
Maiolica (tin-glazed earthenware), 23 x 23.2 cm (9 1/16 x 9 1/8 in.)
This round Majolica plate depicts the Nativity scene. Majolica is tin-glazed pottery painted on a white background. The white-skinned baby Jesus is at the center of the scene, depicted as a nude infant on his back with outstretched arms, lying on a bed of greenish straw. Mary is haloed, and white-skinned, dressed in blue and gold flowing robes with a pale gold cloth covering her hair. She is kneeling to the right of Jesus and holds a blanket as about to cover him. Saint Joseph, also white-skinned, is haloed and has grey hair and beard. He is seated to the left and is dressed in gold and pink robes. His head is resting on his left hand and he holds a long thin tree branch in his right hand. There are two white-skinned shepherds standing behind Mary; one is bearded with grey hair and the other appears younger with brown hair. A cow and a donkey look at Jesus over the blanket that Mary is holding. There is a white-skinned male figure behind Joseph who holds a black disc above his head. This outdoor scene includes a river in the background to the left and wooden beams, possibly of a barn, on the right. There are clouds in the blue sky and the plate is rimmed in deep gold. The back of the plate has concentric yellow, blue and orange circles in the center that echo the colors used in the front image. The outer edge is decorated with blue and orange triangles and dots.
