This horizontal watercolor, painted with loose brushstrokes, depicts a Japanese tea house in an outdoor setting. Our perspective is from across a pond where on the right, one section of the tea house cantilevers over the water on short poles driven into the pond. In this section, one group of three blue kimono-clad people and a second group of two in gray, sit in conversational groupings on red mats on the beige floor.  A canopy of white blossoms or leaves provides shade over their head. In the left and center of the painting, a second seating area lines the far side of the pond.  Here, two additional groups sit on mats on the beige floor and a person wearing red stands to exit the area. Twelve circular lanterns, white with red and blue designs, hang above the guests. Outside and to the left of the tea house a solitary person sits, and farther to the left, two people are standing upright. The pond which extends across most of the foreground has white and blue areas surrounded by darker gray-green areas suggesting shade. Several long poles arise upward from the pond and support a high vine-covered trellis.  Behind the center part of the tea house extending to the left edge of the painting, a low blur of green suggests vegetation, above which a white vaporish band gives way to green treetops under a bluish-white sky.
