This small Impressionistic watercolor painting shows a view of life in Venice. In the foreground is an orderly row of six gondolas moored under a bridge filled with pedestrians crossing a wide canal. The numerous  figures on the bridge appear as a jumble of small dabs of paint. The bridge cuts a bold diagonal swath across the paper from the lower right edge to end two-thirds of the way to the upper and left edges of the paper.  There is a large, low building at the far end of the bridge with a few taller buildings behind it. The low building stretches horizontally across nearly the entire scene. To illustrate a foggy afternoon in winter, the artist uses a subdued color palette of grays and blues with only traces of more colorful hues. The light is weak: the sky, the clouds, and the water have all been rendered subdued and hazy with thin washes of pale color. The watery hues dampen the intensity and the clarity of every stroke of color.
