This scene of the nativity is painted with oil on pine board and set in a golden, horizontal frame with a wide border.  In the center foreground  is the infant Jesus lying naked on the folds of Mary’s deep blue cloak spread on the ground. He is very pale.  His legs are crossed and his right hand is at a 90 degree angle pointed upwards, while his left arm is resting on the cloak.  Two figures frame the baby; Mary on the left, wearing a long dark blue cloak over a red gown.  While a white veil covers her blond hair.  Her face is light-skinned like the child's.  She is kneeling, her hands together in prayer with her head bowed towards the infant.  The figure to the right of the baby is Joseph.  He is depicted as an old man with white hair and beard, and light skin.  He wears a light blue gown with a muted yellow cloak.  His right hand, like the infant’s, is pointed upward and his left arm is at an angle. His head is also bowed towards the infant.  On the ground next to Joseph is a piece of white fabric wrapped around a staff.   In the background, on our left, is a hut with a roof held up with two posts made with leafless, living trees.  There is an ox and donkey at the center.  A large brown mountain seems to be directly behind Joseph. On the far right is the edge of a cliff.  There are two thin dark figures next to it and far off in the distance.  One is sitting with a staff over their shoulder, and the other is standing with their hand on their head, as if looking in the distance.   There is a line of blue sky at the top of the painting.
